When the two actors were in the same class at the Groundlings theater company in Los Angeles, Ben basically used the well-played "Haven't I seen you somewhere before?" to strike up a conversation with Melissa. During one class, students took turns telling the group a few details about themselves. "I said I went to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, a tiny little town that nobody’s heard of," Melissa said. "And Ben said, 'Thank you very much. I’m from Carbondale.'" Ben, who is three years younger than Melissa, had snuck into college parties in Carbondale with his high school friends. "I knew who you were," he told her later. The two hit it off immediately.
