He is a licensed clinical health psychologist who has been working and teaching in the field for over 20 years.Dr. Farkas is on the faculty of Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, where he teaches a course entitled “Motivation and Self-control in Health Behavior.” Dr. Farkas has also served as a business psychology and leadership consultant to several Fortune 500 companies.
In his clinical practice, Dr. Farkas specializes in helping people with emotional eating, binge eating disorder, and other types of unwanted behavior. He helps patients recognize and overcome the psychological barriers that affect their motivation and follow-through in their efforts to change. In treatment, Dr. Farkas uses an approach that he has pioneered, called Intrapersonal Conflict Resolution. This approach helps the patient identify how they manage the universal human conflict between the need for autonomy versus the need for belonging. Finding balance between these two essential needs can be achieved in a healthy, adaptive way, involving compromise in the sacrifice of autonomy and moderation maintaining it, or it can occur with maladaptive behaviors such as binge eating are used as a counterbalance when a reasonable sacrifice of autonomy around eating feels unfair. Therapy consists of identifying and reapprasing one's perception of being controlled by outside forces, like the social pressure to diet. This approach is described in his forthcoming book, 8 Keys to Ending Emotional Eating, which is due to be published by W.W. Norton in 2017.
