I CANNOT believe Hot Topic said this!
"If you can breathe in your jeans, you’re doing it wrong".
This message was in the subject line of an email advertisement for skinny jeans from popular retail brand Hot Topic.
Hot Topic is a brand known their pop culture inspired clothing and accessories. I've been a fan and avid shopper for years, loving their comfortable and cute band shirts and Harry Potter memorabilia, but this struck a chord with me.
How could they possibly think that this was ok? NO ONE should feel suffocated in their jeans — that is SO unhealthy and sends out such a negative message about body image to young men and women.
Don't get me wrong I love my skinny jeans, and I do occasionally get a pair in a size smaller than my own in the vain hope that it will motivate me to lose weight, but I would NEVER force myself into extremely tight jeans that make me uncomfortable. The point of them is to look good on the outside and FEEL good too. And I would certainly not want my retailer of choice telling me that I should be sacrificing my comfort to look, well, COOLER.
This goes for men too. Wearing too tight skinny jeans will suffocate your "man friend". Imagine one of those snakes that get trapped in the toilet drains ... all hell will break loose. And what about your balls? Please don't let your balls suffer and sweat.
Also, leave something to the imagination for the ladies/and or men.
All jokes aside, it's seriously not the best idea to wear suffocating jeans — most importantly for your health.
According to the NEDA (National Eating Disorders) website, in the United States, "20 million women and 10 million men suffer from a clinically significant eating disorder at some time in their life, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder". Those are some SCARY numbers.
Too many of us are constantly believing that we need to be a certain weight or certain size to be considered perfect in society's eyes. But NEWS FLASH: no one will EVER be perfect. Someone somewhere will find something else to critique or try to perfect. You are not perfect. Nobody is. And that's OK.
Seriously, fuck anyone who tries to make you feel shitty about how much you weigh.
You're beautiful whether you're a size 6 or size 16 or size 23. Own it and love it. Wear your "skinny" jeans — just make sure you can BREATHE ... right Hot Topic?
